Why eating a banana for breakfast isn't the best idea

Having a banana for breakfast isn’t as good for you as you think. They’re one of the most convenient breakfasts to eat on the go, but it turns out that eating a banana first thing isn’t such a good idea.

While bananas are packed full of fibre, potassium and magnesium, the yellow fruit has a high sugar content, which can result in a mid-morning slump.

“Bananas seem like the perfect option to grab and go in the morning, but with a closer look, you’ll find that bananas eaten alone aren’t the best option because they’re 25% sugar and moderately acidic,” said Dr. Daryl Gioffre to Byrdie.

“They’ll give you a quick boost, but you’ll soon be tired and feeling hungry,” he said.

Dr. Gioffre advises against eating bananas by themselves, but rather balancing them with a healthy fat, spice or herb to neutralise acidity and prevent an insulin spike.

Raw almond or coconut butter, chia or hemp seeds and cinnamon are among some of his favourites.

So don’t swear off bananas just yet, and try adding them to toast with a peanut butter or porridge with some cinnamon for a quick and easy breakfast option.
