The number of kidney transplant surgeries performed in Armenia averages to 10-12 annually

Currently 12 medical centers can provide hemodialysis in Armenia, 5 of which  (“Arabkir” medical complex for child and teenage health, “Erebuni”, “Surb Grigor Lusavorich”, “Armenia” republican center and “Natali Pharm Malathia”) are located in Yerevan, and the rest (“Gyumri” medical center, “Samariter” rehabilitation center in Gyumri, medical centers in Vanadzor, Kapan, Armavir, Noyemberyan and Gavar) – in the provinces.  The information was provided by RA Ministry of Health chief specialist Gagik Papkyan at a discussion on  hemodialysis service provided in Armenia.

As NEWS.am Medicine was informed by the press service of the Ministry, heads of different services and specialists, as well as chairman of RA National Assembly standing committee for health, motherhood and childhood professor Ara Babloyan took part in the aforementioned discussion. The latter has had a long-term professional experience in the sphere. 

Generally speaking, 684 patients suffering from kidney failure are provided with hemodialysis now, 650 of which - in the frameworks of state programs. As World Health Organisation claims, 400 people out of 1 million turn out to be in the need of hemodialysis globally. In case of Armenia, the number of patients exposed to the service amounts to 220 per a million now, having grown by 60-70 since 2010.

As to the number of kidney transplant surgeries, they average to 10-12 annually in Armenia. Whilst at least 60 transplantations are required to meet the demand.

Most cases of kidney failure registered in Armenia are caused by artery hypertension (21.1%), diabetes (19,2%) and chronic glomerulonephritis (15,3%).
