Doggy-style better for your back?

Spooning may not be the best way to have sex if you're a man with a bad back, a new study says.

Instead, doggy-style (apparently the scientific term) may work better, The Enterprise Bulletin reported.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo in Ontario say it really depends on what kind of back pain you have.

They used infrared and electromagnetic motion capture systems to track how 10 heterosexual couples' spines moved when attempting five common sex positions. The findings resulted in a set of guidelines that recommends different sex positions and thrusting techniques based on what movements trigger a person's back pain.

Spooning is often recommended by physicians as a way to avoid back pain during sex, but many people remain celibate to avoid any discomfort, the researchers said.

"For the first time ever, we now have very solid science to guide clinicians on their recommendations for patients who suffer debilitating back pain, but still want to be intimate," lead author Natalie Sidorkewicz said in a press release.

As an example, the researchers said men who are flexion-intolerant — meaning their back pain becomes worse when they try to touch their toes or if they sit for long periods of time — should have doggy-style sex.

The researchers also said some of the men said their back pain increased during orgasm to the point that several of them avoided having one.
