UN peacekeeper recovers from Ebola

A UN peacekeeper serving in the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has recovered from Ebola. According to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, the peacekeeper "will resume duties while receiving psychological counseling and close monitoring."

The UN peacekeeper from Liberia (UNMIL) who tested positive for Ebola Virus Disease was evacuated to the Netherlands on December 6. Now he has recovered, yet he needs psychological support.

"The Nigerian peacekeeper has returned to the mission area yesterday evening and will resume duties while receiving psychological counseling and close monitoring," the spokesman said.

As Globalpost.com/ reports, Liberia is one of the three hardest hit countries in West Africa in the Ebola crisis, the other two countries are Sierra Leone and Guinea.

The latest figures from the World Health Organization put the total number of Ebola cases at 19 431 and the death toll at 7565.

The UN report said the number of new cases is declining in Liberia, "fluctuating" in Guinea and may have stopped increasing in Sierra Leone. It noted there have been no new cases reported in Mali since November 24.

Liberia still has the highest death toll from the epidemic at more than 3290.
