Woman wakes up from coma and finds out she had a baby

A 20-year-old Tennessee woman who was in a coma for nearly four months woke up this week to find out she had a baby boy.

According to a report on ABC News.com, a car crash in December left Sharista Giles in a coma while she was five months pregnant.

Sharista's aunt told ABC News that doctors originally told the family there was nothing they could do for her.

"They already gave up hope. We never gave up. She's fought this hard," Beverly Giles said.

The family moved Sharista to a rehabilitation center in March. The center called Sharista's family on Wednesday to tell them that she was awake.

Sharista blinked, squeezed the hands of family members and was shown a picture of her baby by her father.

"He showed her a picture of her baby, and she followed the picture," Beverly Giles said. "When he turned around to put it back on the bulletin board, she turned her neck, her whole head trying to follow and find the picture again."

Sharista's baby was born prematurely in January, weighing in at less then 2 pounds. He now weighs 6 pounds and 4 ounces. Sharista's family hasn't named him yet. For now, they call him "Baby L."

The family hopes to bring the baby to Sharista when he is ready to leave the University of Tennessee Medical Center's neonatal intensive care unit.

As far as Sharista's prognosis, doctors said it's too early to tell but her family is holding out hope.
