Five cups of coffee a day may ward off breast cancer

July 28, 2015  20:43

Coffee may protect women against breast cancer, say Swedish researchers.

They analysed two decades of data from more than 40,000 women who'd recorded their daily intake of coffee and tea as well as caffeine from their diet (eg. chocolate); they found that women who had five or more cups of coffee a day had a 19 per cent lower risk compared to those who consumed one or two cups.

By comparison, women who drank more than one cup of tea a day had a 19 per cent increased chance of developing the disease compared to non-drinkers, reports the International Journal of Cancer.

The mechanisms responsible are not fully understood, but one theory about the coffee's benefits, say the researchers, is that it contains antioxidants that protect against cell damage which can lead to cancer.
