Would you use a SPRAY-ON condom?

A design student has created a spray-on condom with an aerosol can that she has dubbed ‘Girlplay’.

Michele Chu’s design concept allows users to spray on their protection as if it were a deodorant.

She said that it will be easier to put on than a conventional condom and more fun - meaning people are more likely to use it.

Chu has taken inspiration from the first man who claimed to have created a spray-on condom, German sexual health teacher Jan Vinzenz Krause.

In 2008 he created the world’s first version for men after being inspired by the mechanics of a drive through car wash.

The prototype had a hard plastic tube with nozzles on it that sprayed liquid latex in all directions.

But it never took off as the latex took too long to dry meaning that lovers had to wait up to three minutes after taking it out of the package - which killed the mood.

Now Chu, a senior student at Pratt Institute in New York, is trying to bring the idea back again.

Girlplay is only a design concept but she hopes it will reinvigorate interest in the idea of a spray-on condom.

Chu said it would remove the need for different sizes of condom as users would just spray it onto the penis, though the aerosol would work for women as well.

She created a ‘lover’s kit’ which includes a smart bra which is controlled by a remote control and what she calls ‘conventional’ condoms, though they do have a twist.

The remote control is also able to control the condom's various effects, modes, and flavours, as well as being able to unhook the smartbra with just a button.

The designs for the concept are in black packaging with pink writing on it.

On her website Chu said that Girlplay was aimed at ‘bold daring women’ and that she wanted to change ‘the whole experience of love-making’.

She wrote: ‘It produces a line of spray-on condoms that uses the latest technology to fit each and every size, for both male and female.

‘These spray-on condoms are made for the perfect fit, and function like spray-on bandages in the marketplace today.

‘They also come in a set called the Lover’s kit, which includes multiple parts like bras and remote controls to enhance our customers’ experience.

‘We create revolutionary spray-on condoms that are perfect for today's fast-paced environment.’

In an interview with PSFK she also said that the condom market ‘needed some refreshing’.

She said: ‘Condoms look like those little ramen seasoning packets. They’ve just been these square things forever.’
