Women are TWICE as likely to be bisexual than men

Women are more than twice as likely to be bisexual than men, a new study into the nation's sexuality revealed today.

Overall 93 per cent of adults in the UK say they are straight, while 1.1 per cent are gay or lesbian and 0.5 per cent are bisexual.

But the report from the Office for National Statistics reveals marked differences between men and women.

The Integrated Household Survey asks adults in the UK questions on their 'self-perceived sexual identity'.

While the majority reported being heterosexual, 4 per cent refused to answer and 1.4 per cent did not respond.

Overall the lesbian, gay and bisexual population has remained stable as a proportion of the country at between 1.5 and 1.6 per cent.

Young people are more likely to say they are not straight. In 2014, 2.6 per cent of adults aged 16 to 24 identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual.

This figure fell to just 0.6 per cent of adults aged 65 and over, pointing to a generational divide.

Women are more than twice as likely to say they are bisexual (0.7 per cent) than men (0.3 per cent).

By contrast, twice as many men identified themselves as gay (1.5 per cent) when compared with women at just 0.7 per cent.

Last year London had the highest proportion of adults identifying themselves as lesbian, gay or bisexual at 2.6 per cent - two thirds higher than the national average.

Most other parts of the country were in line with the national average, ranging from 1 per cent in East Midlands to 1.8 per cent in the South East.

When broken down by occupation, adults in managerial and professional jobs are more likely to be gay or bisexual at 2.1 per cent compared to intermediate occupations (1.3 per cent) or routine and manual occupations (1.4 per cent).
