Scientists find link between vegetarianism and depression

Vegetarians are diagnosed with episodes of depression twice as often, Brazilian scientists have found, Journal of Affective Disorders reported.

The researchers analyzed various dietary factors, including total calorie intake, protein and micronutrients and food processing levels. The scientists concluded that more depression among vegetarians was not caused by diet.

They hypothesized that depressed people are more likely to become vegetarians because these patients often have negative thinking and feelings of guilt. The development of depression may be affected by relationships with other people and society because of vegetarianism. The disease may also have a third cause - cruel images of meat production.
