Daily Mail: drinking too much water can cause seizures

Stuart Fisher, an American doctor and author of books on healthy eating, said that drinking too much water can provoke seizures and loss of consciousness, the Daily Mail reports.

Many nutritionists recommend consuming about eight glasses of water a day - it's essential for digestive and cardiovascular function, as well as for transporting oxygen and nutrients to cells and tissues. However, eight glasses of water drunk within an hour can cause hyponatremia. This condition is characterized by a severe decrease in plasma sodium levels.

Fisher explained that hyponatremia is sometimes accompanied by loss of consciousness, disorientation, and seizures. However, such dangerous consequences can only occur when a person exceeds the water intake for a long time or drinks too quickly.

To improve well-being, patients are often prescribed infusion therapy with sodium chloride solution using an IV. The treatment usually helps patients recover quickly and return to normal life.

The doctor also warned that pregnant women should very carefully monitor the amount of water they drink. It is highly undesirable to consume more than eight glasses a day.
