Zumba gets you fitter than salsa

Zumba dancing is more effective than salsa to help inactive women get healthier.

In a study by Kingston University and the University of the West of Scotland, 24 healthy women aged 22-56, who usually only exercised once a week, did two salsa and two Zumba classes over a fortnight.

Salsa is a Latin American dance done in pairs, while Zumba is a high-intensity exercise routine inspired by Latin American dance.
Recordings taken from chest monitors and wristbands worn during sessions found the women burned more calories and physical activity was more vigorous during Zumba - with more steps taken and heart rate rising more.

But questionnaires showed that both dances were associated with improvements in psychological well-being, according to the Journal of Sport and Health Science.
