Alcohol can cause erectile dysfunction?

February 1, 2017  23:49

The condition can have a range of causes, including narrowing of the blood vessels, a problem usually associated with diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.

It is very common particularly among older men - and it is estimated that half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 will have it to some degree.

However, erectile dysfunction can be caused by drinking too much alcohol and some men who drink over the recommended limit can be affected.

Dr Adam Simon, chief medical officer at Push Doctor, the digital doctor’s service, explained how alcohol can cause impotence and even affect fertility.

“There’s no set amount of alcohol that will affect your sexual performance, as not everyone responds to alcohol in the same way,” he said.

“However, do remember that there are many reasons why we’re advised not to drink more than 14 units a week.

“Drinking more than this amount - which roughly equates to around six glasses of wine or six pints of beer - can cause sex and fertility issues for both men and women.

“Men may experience erectile problems, either by failing to get an erection or failing to maintain it long enough to actually have sex.

Dr Simon explained: “Normally, your blood vessels open to allow blood flow to the penis, then close again to stop blood from leaving it.

“When you drink too much, the body can’t complete this second step, so the blood doesn’t stay where it’s needed.”

He warned the issue of reduced fertility is ‘serious’.

“While the risks aren’t fully understood, research has uncovered a link between alcohol consumption and a reduced chance of conception in women.

“Men can also experience fertility issues, since excessive drinking can lead to a low sperm count and poor quality sperm.

“The equation appears to be a simple one - the less you drink, the less likely you are to experience difficulties with sexual performance and the more likely you are to conceive.”

Other issues which affect fertility in men and women are age - two thirds of women over the age of 40 experience fertility issues, STIs and smoking.

NHS Choices said: “Drinking excessively can affect the quality of sperm.”

“It said for men hoping to conceive with a partner should drink no more than 14 units of alcohol every week - spread evening over three days.”

People concerned about fertility problems can do tests to identify possible issues and GPs can advice them on the next steps.
