Doctors have extracted a live FISH from a man's throat.

Santosh Dash was fishing in a pond when the 4-inch climbing perch wriggled out of his hands - and into his mouth.

The fish became lodged in his throat, leaving Santosh, 30, struggling for breath and unable to talk.

He was rushed to hospital where medics battled unsuccessfully to remove the wriggling creature.

He was later transferred to Apollo Hospitals in Bhuwaneshwar, some 200km from his village of Podadhia, in Odisha, India, where doctors used forceps to pull it out.

Investigations revealed he suffered lacerations inside his throat from the fish's fins.

Senior consultant of ENT Department Dr Sanjeev Gupta could only see the tail of the fish.

"Mouth gag was applied and the fish was caught with forceps. It was removed with gradual traction.

The patient was kept on a nasal tube feeding for 10 days till he completely recovered, but has since been discharged from hospital.
