New device clips onto your birth control pack and will send an alert to your smartphone if you have forgotten to take it

A new device has been created that can clip onto birth control packs to make sure women remember to take their daily pill.

'Popit' uses a microphone to hear the 'pop' sound of a pill being pressed out of the packet and a touch-sensor to detect whether the packet has been handled.

Created by Helsinki-based company, Popit Ltd, the device connects to smartphones and if a pill has not been taken, an alert will be sent as a reminder.

As The Daily Mail reports, the Popit Sense app also stores data about pill consumption and can alert women if they have taken more pills than they should have.

The small clip has a suggested retail price of £59 ($79) and requires the download of an application onto a Android or iPhone.

Teemu Piirainen, Popit Ltd CEO, said: 'This kind of technology hasn't been available before and it opens up exciting new possibilities.

'The investment will enable us to pursue our vision of quantifying medication - we track pills and support the patient in staying on track with medical treatment.'

One in nine US women may have experienced an unintended pregnancy due to missing a pill, according to research done by Popit Ltd.

'The risk of unwanted pregnancy with birth control pills is higher than many assume,' said co-founder Timo Heikkilä.

'In typical use the risk of an unwanted pregnancy with pills is a staggering 30x higher than with absolute, perfect use.

'Popit helps in getting birth control pill use closer to where it should be.

'The solution also provides insights and statistics on pill use, making it the perfect sidekick for oral contraceptives.

'In a clinical setting the solution has reduced the amount of missed birth control pills by over 80%.'

Juho Risku, co-founder, said: 'The global cost impact of not taking pills that come in large packs is well over 100 billion dollars yearly.

'Popit's product tackles the problem in an intuitive way - I believe it is going to take a significant share of the adherence market.'

Popit are currently fundraising here. More information can be found on their website.
