Teen battling rare cancer weds high school sweetheart

January 30, 2018  16:50

A teenager with terminal cancer has married his high school sweetheart after being given just weeks to live.

Dustin Snyder, 19, wanted to spend what precious time he had left married to the "love of his life" Sierra Siverio, who never left his side after he became ill.

A national fundraising drive, launched by family, friends and neighbours, brought in $39,567 which allowed them to pay for their dream wedding.

The young couple first met in middle school at their home of Valrico, Florida, but on the day before Dustin’s 18th birthday he was diagnosed with cancer.

He has been battling a rare form of cancer called synovial sarcoma ever since.

The disease was first discovered in his lung and following treatment, doctors believed it had been removed, but months later it spread to his stomach and pelvis.

“After my first surgery when she was there for me in the hospital for 10 days straight, didn’t ever leave. That’s when I knew she was the one,” Dustin told Fox 13 .

Things got worse for the couple when doctors told Dustin that his cancer was so aggressive that he only had weeks to live.

This news convinced Dustin that he wanted to spend the limited time he had left being with Sierra.

"I feel amazing, this is the most special day of my life," Dustin said at his wedding.

“Saying 'I do' and being forever in love with Sierra and being with her for the rest of, as long as I have,” is what Dustin wanted, he said.

The couple are going to Disney World to celebrate their honeymoon and cherish every moment they have together.

The young coupe said that they are hugely grateful to everyone who helped make their wedding day a dream come true.

Dustin's sister Brittany set up a GoFundMe me page which raised tens of thousands of dollars for the wedding.

On the page she wrote: "He really wants to marry the woman that has stuck by his side through all the sleepless night and now dealing with knowing he will pass any time soon.

"Dustin always said 'She is a Keeper'. Please lets help Dustin enjoy the rest of his life with his soulmate."

There wasn't a dry eye in the venue when the couple tied the knot surrounded by friends and family, reports CBS affiliate WTSP.

Snyder's family says that any extra money raised that was not used for the wedding will be "going for the cost for when the day comes for Dustin to be at rest."
