IVF fertility blogger dies during emergency caesarean

A fertility blogger's journey through IVF and pregnancy has ended in tragedy after her husband revealed she had died during an emergency caesarean.

Spanish mother-to-be Vanessa Fernandez Arango, 30, earned a social media following by sharing news of her fertility treatment on Instagram over the last year.

But she suffered a fatal heart attack during surgery after fainting when she felt unwell, leaving her husband Jonathan Garcia, 32, to share the sad news with her 2,700 followers.  

The baby boy, called Alvaro, survived the operation.

The couple, from Bilbao, married in 2016 and Vanessa went on to document their efforts to have a baby.

She had lost her fallopian tubes after she suffered complications in two previous pregnancies, meaning she needed fertility treatment to have a child, El Mundo reported.

The social media posts were intended to 'help women who were going through our same situation or similar', her husband said.

When she revealed her positive test for pregnancy, she wrote online: 'The beginning of the end, the beginning of feeling alive, the end of suffering.'

But earlier this month she fainted after feeling unwell at breakfast and was taken to hospital. 

Medics began an emergency caesarean to deliver the baby but she suffered a cardiac arrest and died just hours after going to hospital. 

Sharing the news online, Jonathan wrote: 'This is Vanessa's husband. They have carried out an emergency caesarean. The baby is in intensive care. Vanessa has died.

'You will understand that this account will now close. Thank you all for making her laugh.' 

The post was accompanied by a picture of Vanessa wearing a pink bikini and sunglasses while her husband put his hand on her pregnant belly.

Paying further tribute, he said: 'She was unique, the best friend, daughter, companion, wife, and I'm sure she would have been a great mother.

'She would like, above all, that what surrounds assisted reproduction is not a taboo subject in society.'

A week after Vanessa's death her husband posted pictures of baby Alvaro making good progress, first in intensive care and later as he was given his first bottle feed.

He said: 'I never imagined a goodbye message in her honour would have led to such an avalanche of support. I want you to know I will continue with her dream of helping other couples.'

The couple had reportedly met in 2010, on the day that Spain won football's World Cup, and married six years later.
