Woman, 36, at death's door after botched plastic surgery in Mexico

A Dallas woman who went to Mexico for plastic surgery is at death’s door and placed in a hospice after an allegedly misplaced anesthesia IV caused extensive brain damage and sent her into cardiac arrest.

According to a GoFundMe page set up to cover the woman’s medical and other expenses, real estate agent Laura Avila underwent plastic surgery at a clinic in Juarez, Mexico on Oct. 30. Instead of the enhanced nose and replaced breast implants she had contracted for, Avila ended up on life support. She has since been put into hospice care, her family said in their statement.

“Based on the recommendation of Laura’s physicians, and after hours of agony and consideration, our family moved Laura to a more comfortable facility late last night,” said her family in their statement. “Laura is peacefully resting and her fate is in the hands of God. Visitation is limited to immediate family and very close friends. We appreciate your understanding and respect towards our wishes. Thank you for keeping Laura in your prayers and for all of your continued love & support.”

Avila, 36, went to the Rino Clinic in Juarez for what would normally be relatively routine elective surgery. But a few minutes into the procedure she went into cardiac arrest and was put into a medically induced coma. She was later transferred to a hospital, then eventually moved to Texas.
