British woman regains speech after stroke - but is shocked when her accent turns Russian

March 12, 2019  11:59

A mum, who was told she would never walk or talk again after suffering a stroke, battled with rehabilitation only to find herself speaking with a foreign accent.

Rose Griffiths, 69, of Liverpool City Centre , was working at Asda in 2014 when she collapsed suddenly, temporarily losing all movement in her right hand side and the ability to speak, read and write.

She was told by a consultant that due to the stroke, it was very unlikely that she would ever be able to perform these functions again.

However, through hard work and determination, Rose learnt to walk and started to write with her non-dominant hand.

But when she regained her speech, she was shocked to find herself with Foreign Accent Syndrome, speaking with a Russian accent instead of the Scouse accent she'd always had.

Rose said: "At first I wasn’t able to communicate with the outside world and it was very frustrating. I always thought I would be like this, but knew I wanted to get better...

"When my speech came back, at first I had a Russian accent although I was born in Liverpool City Centre."

Yet there was more surprise in store for Rose, who has two daughters, as her Russian accent suddenly changed to Eastern European, then German.
