French mayor trying to start baby boom by giving out Viagra

A French mayor is trying to get a rise out of young couples and get them to move to his small village and start families — offering them free Viagra if they do, according to local reports.

Jean Debouzy, mayor of Montereau, a village of just 650 people south of Paris, issued an official decree saying he was “favorable to the distribution of small blue pills,” according to Le Parisien.

Debouzy said he would offer the pills, typically prescribed for erectile dysfunction, to strangers in the hopes they move to his town, as well as couples already there, hoping to spark a baby boom that would save his schools, according to The Local.

“The pills will be distributed to couples between the ages of 18 and 40 in order to give them the chance of conception and thus preserve the schools of the two villages,” the decree reportedly stated.

It also said that the village council would consider one-off payments to couples who went ahead and had a baby.

“A village without children is a village that dies,” Jean Debouzy told The Local.

Debouzy had yet to receive any requests since the decree last Thursday — and admitted to The Local that he had yet to actually get any of the pills ready for distribution.

“If needs be I’ll get the agreement of the council and we’ll get a stock in,” he insisted — even though Viagra can only be obtained with a prescription in France.
