Increasing the duration of sleep is still good for the heart, scientists from the University of Cape Town found out.

The goal of the new study was to understand the relationship between cardiometabolic risk and the duration of sleep. Scientists have analyzed seven scientific papers on prolonged sleep, and it turned out that people who did not get enough sleep, a significant increase in the duration of sleep clearly had a positive effect on metabolic processes and heart condition.

The studies that the researchers analyzed included data from 138 adults from several groups:

  • people who have not had any health or sleep problems;
  • people who were healthy, but slept little;
  • persons who have been overweight and have not slept much;
  • people who have a lack of sleep and hypertension.

Sleep schedule changed for a period of 3 to 6 weeks. In total, the duration of sleep increased by 21-177 minutes. As it turned out, this increase had a positive effect on the state of the heart and reduced the risk of developing a number of diseases.

Interestingly, in addition to the benefits to the heart, an increase in sleep duration reduced appetite, weakened cravings for sweet and salty foods, and also reduced the amount of calorie intake from protein each day.
