Patient, 20, overcomes Crohn's disease due to special diet

A 20-year-old patient with Crohn's disease is in prolonged remission thanks to a herbal diet, Nutrients reported

A patient was diagnosed with Crohn's disease when he turned to specialists with severe abdominal pain, bloating and nausea that had tormented him for many years.

After a year of treatment with intravenous therapy, the patient began remission. The following year, during a 40-day religious fast, he excluded all animal products and all processed foods from his diet. Soon he noticed that all the symptoms of the disease had disappeared, and therefore he decided to continue to follow the vegetable diet (fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes). The diet led to a complete remission of Crohn's disease.

Moreover, endoscopy showed complete healing of the small intestinal mucosa. The patient was even able to stop taking the medication; for a long time the patient lives without relapses.

According to co-author of the article, Han Kahleova,  this case report provides hope for hundreds of thousands of people suffering from painful symptoms associated with Crohn's disease.

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that is difficult to treat: only about 10% of patients achieve long-term remission using standard medicines and about half of the patients need surgery.

The exact cause of the disease is unknown. A combination of factors, including genetics, environmental influences and increased regulation of the immune system leads to its occurrence.
