Why diabetes is dangerous for women?

July 22, 2019  12:10

A group of scientists from Australia and the UK found that type 1 diabetes dramatically increases the risk of heart failure in women, MedicalXpress reported referring to Diabetologia.

The study analyzed data from more than 12 million diabetics. As a result, it was found that women, compared to men, increased the risk of developing heart failure in the background of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is associated with a 47% excess risk of heart failure in women compared to men, whilst type 2 diabetes has a 9% excess risk of heart failure for women than men.

Scientists associate this with ischemic heart disease, which, in the setting of diabetes, most often develops in women. Also, blood sugar levels in women are controlled at a lower level.
