Osteoarthritis significantly increases risk of heart disease

Forced hypodynamia due to osteoarthritis significantly increases the risk of heart disease, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage reported.

As part of the research, data from 469177 residents of southern Sweden aged 45 to 84 years old were analyzed. Scientists monitored their health for up to 11 years. During this period, osteoarthritis was diagnosed in 29,189 people.

It was found that patients with osteoarthritis of the knee or hip joint are almost 20% more likely to suffer from chronic heart disease and heart failure. At the same time, this risk increased with the course of osteoarthritis, and was most clearly manifested within 9-11 years after diagnosis.

The author of the study, Martin Endlund from the University of Lund in Sweden, notes. That with pain in the joints, activity decreases, which, along with obesity, increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

He urged osteoarthritis patients to be more active, pointing out that exercise is an important component of the treatment of this disease.
