Researchers at the Erasmus University of Rotterdam Medical Center have found that both low and high hemoglobin levels increase the risk of dementia, Neurology reported

Scientists analyzed the data of 12,305 people as part of the Rotterdam population study. The average age of the volunteers was 64.6 years, of which 57.7% were women. All people did not have cognitive problems at the beginning of the study.

Scientists measured the level of serum hemoglobin for the participants and monitored them for about 12 years. Over the indicated period, 1520 people developed dementia, and the vast majority of them - 1194 - were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

It turned out that the risk of dementia increased by 20% at the highest hemoglobin level, while Alzheimer's disease - by 22%, and with a lower hemoglobin level, the risks increased by 29% and 36%, respectively. At the same time, researchers took into account indicators such as education level, blood pressure, the presence / absence of diabetes, alcohol consumption etc.
