Breast milk helps babies establish their own circadian rhythms

August 15, 2019  09:42

Scientists from the University of Southern California made an interesting discovery: it turns out that breast milk helps babies establish their own circadian rhythms, Pediatric Research reported.

Lead author of the study, Jennifer Hahn-Holbrook, and his colleagues analyzed data on the composition of breast milk and its changes during the day. It turned out that the level of the hormone cortisol in morning breast milk is three times higher than in the evening, and the sleep hormone melatonin is practically absent. Meanwhile, in the evening, the concentration of melatonin in milk rises and reaches a peak around midnight.
