Gadgets affect brain activity

August 15, 2019  11:01

Psychologists and linguists from the University of Pennsylvania decided to study the effects of smartphones and tablets on the ability to understand academic texts, Scientific Reports said

As part of the study, scientists relied on brain research data using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and also, using a special device, tracked the eye movements of subjects while reading scientific texts. In total, 51 students took part in the experiment. All volunteers at the end of reading the articles had to answer 10 questions regarding their content.

It turned out that the more students depended on gadgets, the lower was the activity of the islet lobe and lower frontal gyrus of the brain.

According to scientists, frequent use of electronic devices, the activity of certain areas of the brain decreases. Experts voice their conclusions with caution, recognizing the need for larger studies to confirm this hypothesis.
