Scientists find way to reduce tick frequency in Tourette’s syndrome

September 13, 2019  21:31

Japanese scientists have developed a new method to reduce tick frequency in Tourette’s syndrome.

People with this syndrome cannot control the tics. Cures for this disease have not yet been found. To alleviate the condition of patients, doctors give them dopamine blockade, as well as conduct psychotherapy sessions.

A group of scientists at the Dental Clinic of the University of Osaka proposed the use of a specialized splint, which is fixed to the jaw of the patient. It has helped reduce tick frequency for most patients.

Experts note that due to it, tics completely stopped in many patients under 14, while in other age groups of patients, the decrease of tick frequency reached 50%.
