Plant-based diet both helps lose weight, and reduce rheumatoid arthritis’ symptoms

A plant-based diet can help both lose weight, and relieve the inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis, Frontiers in Nutrition reported.

This diet consisting of vegetables, grains, and legumes can be extremely beneficial for people with rheumatoid arthritis, according to a press release from the Committee of Doctors for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).

Having performed a meta-analysis of clinical trials and observational studies, PCRM experts found four options for the effect of a plant-based diet on rheumatoid arthritis:

Vegetarian diet patients have lower levels of C-reactive proteins associated with inflammation;

A low-fat, high-fiber diet reduces morning stiffness and swollen joints;

Vegetable diets contribute to better weight loss than diets containing meat. Moreover, a loss of only 5 kilograms of weight three times increases the likelihood of remission in arthritis;

Finally, a fiber-rich plant diet can diversify intestinal bacteria, which also helps to relieve inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

This study gives hope that with a simple menu change, joint pain, swelling, and other painful symptoms may decrease or even disappear.
