World's first peanut allergy treatment approved

September 16, 2019  13:08

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the world's first peanut allergy medicine, Science reported.

According to the source, a drug known so far as AR101, developed by Aimmune Therapeutics, can help people with peanut allergies who accidentally consumed this product. The medicine is a pill containing a small amount of peanut protein: the patient should take them, gradually increasing the dose. As a result, the body must get used to this protein and stop responding to it with a violent allergic reaction.

This treatment is already practiced by 200 allergists in the US: they give patients calibrated doses of peanut products. But people can take medicine at home on their own. The treatment is experimental in nature, so all patients taking the drug will have to carry adrenaline with them in case allergy symptoms occur.

Peanut allergy is one of the most severe and dangerous types of allergies. Recently in Canada, a 20-year-old girl named Miriam died after being kissed by a guy who ate a peanut butter sandwich before a date. As it turned out, the girls were allergic to peanuts, because of which she had an instant swelling of the airways.
