Taking vitamin D for three or more years can help prolong the life of cancer patients, Cancer Prevention, Hereditary Genetics, and Epidemiology reported referring to a study.
Scientists at Hurley Medical Center and the University of Michigan analyzed disease prevention data from over 79,000 patients that randomly compared vitamin D supplements with placebo for at least three years.
Based on the results, they determined that vitamin D supplementation was associated with a significant reduction in cancer mortality.
The difference in mortality between the vitamin D and placebo groups was statistically significant to be significant among the cancer patient population. However, researchers note that the required dosage of vitamin D in the blood is still unknown. They also said that it is unclear how this vitamin can prolong life.
