Experimental HIV vaccine is ineffective, clinical trial stopped

February 6, 2020  17:12

A clinical trial of an experimental HIV vaccine in South Africa has been stopped because the vaccine turned out to be ineffective.

The HVTN 702 study was one of three new studies of potential HIV vaccines, and over 5,000 people participated. Scientists had high hopes for this vaccine in early December 2019.

According to Mitchell Warren, AVAC executive director that works to prevent HIV infection, the fact that the promising vaccine is not working is very disappointing. However, the study was very good, and they got the answer as quickly as possible.

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci , in his turn, noted that work on creating an effective HIV vaccine is ongoing, and he believes such a vaccine will be created one day.
