70% of COVID-19 patients do not infect anyone, study claims

70% of COVID-19 patients do not infect anyone, scientists from Hong Kong noted.

Their new study is being prepared for review, medportal.ru reported. The preprint of the study is published on researchsquare.com.

The study showed that only 20% of those infected with coronavirus were responsible for 80% of new infections: this phenomenon is called episodes of hyperproliferation when one person transmits the virus to a large number of people indoors or in transport.

Interestingly, 70% of infected people, as the researchers found, do not transmit the virus further to other people.

According to co-author of the study Ben Cowling, hyperproliferation cases occur more often than thought.

Cowling and colleagues analyzed over 1,000 COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong from April 23 to April 28.
