Scientists find another threat caused by COVID-19

June 15, 2020  12:51

The COVID-19 increases the risk of developing diabetes in patients, scientists from Melbourne University, King's College London, and several other research institutions noted.

They published a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

According to scientists, the protein ACE-2, which promotes the penetration of coronavirus into human cells, also affects the organs responsible for glucose metabolism.

Scientists have not yet found out whether glucose metabolism changes after the patient recovers. It is also unknown whether diabetes, developing after contracting COVID-19, is some new type, or whether it belongs to previously known types.
