Scientists find over 568 genes that can potentially cause cancer
Scientists from the IRB Barcelona - Institute for Research in Biomedicine analyzed 28,000 tumors of 66 different types and identified 568 genes that trigger the development of malignant diseases.
This study allowed for the renewal of the platform for integrative oncogenomics (IntOGen), aimed at identifying genes that drive cancer mutations. The results of the study were published in the journal Nature Reviews Cancer and represent the most comprehensive list of genes associated with cancer to date.
The driver genes list provides cancer researchers, in both clinical and basic research, with important knowledge and influences clinical decision making, says Nuria Lopez-Bigas, author of the analysis.
According to the author, for example, if we know that the carcinogenic capacity of a tumor depends on a certain protein, drugs that interfere with its function can be used by oncologists to treat a patient.
