Olive oil may help control blood pressure, study claims

August 28, 2020  15:43

Drinking cold-pressed olive oil daily can significantly lower blood pressure, one of the key risk factors for heart disease, Nutrients reported referring to the scientists from the La Trobe University.

Scientists decided to test the cardioprotective properties of cold-pressed olive oil, produced in Australia, on 50 healthy adults with different life experiences and dietary habits.

As it turns out, consuming four tablespoons of olive oil per day can reduce central and peripheral systolic blood pressure by 2.5 and 2%, respectively.

Extra virgin olive oil is rich in a variety of active compounds such as polyphenols that have proven health benefits through anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, said lead author Katerina Sarapis.

According to her, their research confirms that the benefits linked to the consumption of olive oil extend to people of non-Mediterranean backgrounds, cultures, traditions, and dietary habits.
