Scientists develop cheap and lightweight portable MRI scanner

November 26, 2020  09:46

A team of scientists led by researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) has developed an inexpensive, compact, portable, and low-power MRI scanner.

It can be installed in an ambulance, easily brought into the patient's room, or placed in small clinics or private doctors' offices, Nature Biomedical Engineering reported.

As Medical Express says, standard MRI scanners are known to be expensive, require specialized infrastructure, and are not mobile.

The new portable MRI scanner is designed specifically for brain imaging. It can be plugged into a standard power outlet and produces much less noise than traditional MRI scanners. The scanner can easily be transported on a trolley by one person, and if desired.
