Study shows cancer has become main reason for death of people with diabetes

Based on a study by scientists at the Imperial College in London, the findings of which were published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology Journal, cancer has become the main reason for death of people suffering from diabetes.

Over the past 18 years, the authors of the study funded by Wellcome Trust tracked over 300,000 patients with diabetes and found that in the years between 2001 and 2018, heart disease and stroke have ceased to be the main reasons for death of people with diabetes as they were 18 years ago.

Overall, in the period of study, the mortality rate of people with diabetes decreased by more than 30% for patients of both genders.

Based on the study, today, people with diabetes are more at risk of dying from cancer, dementia, liver disease and respiratory viruses.
