Patients with COVID-19 who also have gum disease are more likely to develop severe complications, while the risk of death increases, Journal of Clinical Periodontology reported.

According to the study, patients with COVID-19 infection and diseased gums are nine times more likely to develop complications than those with COVID-19 who have no problems with gums.

Periodontitis is an infectious disease of the oral cavity that leads to tooth loss and other serious problems. Periodontitis or periodontal disease is accompanied by systemic inflammation, a risk factor inherent in other chronic diseases. It is already well known that people with chronic diseases are most often at risk of the most severe form of COVID-19.

A new study found that patients with COVID-19 and gum disease are not only more likely to experience complications leading to death, but are also much more likely to end up in intensive care units and connect to a ventilator.
