Scientists find effective remedy for allergies

March 12, 2021  21:31

Scientists from the Australian National University have found an effective way to prevent autoimmune diseases and allergic reactions in the body. The proposed method is based on the action of a specific protein called neuritin.

If neuritin is absent, a person is more susceptible to death from anaphylaxis, Cell reported highlighting the protein's role in preventing life-threatening allergic reactions.

With allergies, MedicalXpress says the immune system overreacts to allergens like pollen, dust, or peanut butter, and it produces antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE). In turn, the release of histamine occurs, causing redness and swelling.

It turned out that neuritin prevents the excessive formation of IgE, which is usually associated with some common forms of allergies and food intolerances. The substance also inhibits the formation of foreign plasma cells that produce harmful antibodies characteristic of autoimmune diseases.

Scientists hope that the results of this study will lead to the development of effective methods to combat autoimmune diseases and allergies without weakening the immune system.
