May common cold virus protect against COVID-19?

The cold virus triggers an immune response in the body of the sick person, which avoids infection with the coronavirus, said scientists from Yale University.

According to the Hull Daily Mail, it has been known in the past that boosting immunity from the common cold can protect a person from the flu. Therefore, scientists began to look for a similar mechanism to combat coronavirus.

The authors of the new study grew respiratory tissue in the laboratory and infected it with the rhinovirus, which causes the common cold, and later with the coronavirus. After interacting with the first, the immune system was activated and stopped the spread of COVID-19. Scientists hope that the results of their work will help develop more effective treatments for coronavirus.

According to experts, this method should be applied as quickly as possible from the moment the patient contracted the coronavirus: this will avoid the exponential spread of the coronavirus. However, later, you should not turn to such therapy, since high levels of interferon can unnecessarily stimulate the immune system and aggravate the course of COVID-19.
