The incidence of hepatitis B and C in Armenia decreased by 6 and 9 percent, respectively. Romella Abovyan, Head of the Department of Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases and Infectious Diseases of the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Armenian Ministry of Health, told reporters.

According to the specialist, the situation with viral hepatitis in Armenia today is quite serious, as often diseases are practically asymptomatic, and a person does not go to a doctor. The disease is often found 15-20 years after infection, when there are already many complications, including cirrhosis of the liver or already cancer.

The specialist also noted that no cases of hepatitis B are registered among children under 14 years old in Armenia - all thanks to the vaccination program against this virus, introduced since 1999. Vaccination is considered the best way to protect against hepatitis B today. However, there is no vaccine for hepatitis C yet.

As Narina Sargsyants noted in turn, according to the estimated data of specialists at the end of 2018, there should be about 68,000 patients with hepatitis C in Armenia.
