COVID-19 is far from the only disease in which a patient can lose their sense of smell.

According to Russian infectious disease specialist Tatyana Chalenko and therapist Tatyana Romanenko, there are a number of such diseases.

Loss of smell can occur due to various respiratory diseases, allergies, as well as damage to the nervous system.

As Chalenko noted respiratory viruses, allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis, as well as diseases with damage to the central nervous system, such as multiple sclerosis or Alzheimer's syndrome, can contribute to the loss of smell.

Romanenko, in turn, noted that problems with the sense of smell can provoke any diseases of the nasal cavity, upper respiratory tract, any respiratory viral infection, runny nose, nasal congestion, as well as allergic diseases.

The specialist added that to make the patient a correct diagnosis, he needs to be examined by a doctor.
