Why deaths from Covid are so high in Armenia?

December 2, 2021  14:05

The quite high mortality rate in Armenia from the coronavirus is due both to the lower rate of vaccination against and to the general health of the population and the high prevalence of chronic diseases, minister of health Anahit Avanesyan told reporters Thursday.

"The risk factors that affect human health—it is high [blood] pressure, it is diabetes—they increase by many times the risk of death in the case of the same Covid disease," the minister added.

According to her, that is why it is very important for people with chronic diseases to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

As per Avanesyan, the respective vaccination of people over the age of 65 is equally important, and the number of people vaccinated among them has doubled in Armenia in the last month.

According to the minister, they try to convey information about the importance of these vaccinations to these elderly by way of leaflets and SMS messages.
