What are the dangers of chronic stress?

Stress causes the body to produce cortisol, the so-called stress hormone, an excess of which is bad for both health and mood, endocrinologist Alyona Barredo (Russia) warns.

According to her, against a background of constant stress increases the risk of gaining weight, problems with the reproductive system, blood vessels and gastrointestinal tract.

Cortisol, according to the specialist, reduces the synthesis of proteins, against which the level of sugar and cholesterol become high. To lower sugar, the body will begin to produce insulin, and this will lead to weight gain.

The specialist said that insulin is a hormone that stores, deposits fat in various places. Especially in the upper half of the torso: the stomach, chest, arms and legs. Due to the fact that protein metabolism decreases against the background of cortisol, arms and legs will be thin, because proteins will be destroyed.

Chronic stress also harms the gastrointestinal tract and sex life. Cortisol reduces the production of testosterone and estrogen, which are responsible not only for reproductive function, but also for the elasticity of blood vessels and blood pressure. Progesterone levels, which regulate satisfaction and mood stability, are also decreased.

The specialist reminded that it's extremely important to listen to yourself and your symptoms in order to seek medical help on time.
