Collective immunity may be powerless against Omicron strain

January 17, 2022  12:34

Collective immunity may not work against the omicron strain of coronavirus, Maxim Skulachev, a leading researcher of Moscow State University, a molecular biologist and virologist said.

According to URA.RU, the experience of countries where Omicron has already caused an increase in morbidity demonstrates the impotence of collective immunity against the new strain.

The specialist says that the task of collective immunity is to protect people from infection and stop the spread of the virus. However, the omicron strain overcomes immune protection with a significantly higher probability than other variants of the coronavirus.

According to Skulachev, countries with a high level of collective immunity are now also experiencing a sharp rise in the spread of the disease. At the same time, the specialist stressed that the population is better prepared for the spread of the new strain of coronavirus infection.
