An increase in belly fat may indicate type 2 diabetes, nutritionist and fitness instructor Cassandra Barnes (Canada) said.

There are many other signs that can indicate this disease.

"It's important to say that none of these individual signs means you definitely have high blood sugar, but they do indicate that it's worth seeing a doctor, who will run some tests if necessary," said the specialist.

One alarming factor is weight gain. According to the specialist, weight gain around the belly indicates that blood sugar levels may be high. Therefore, an enlarged abdomen is a serious reason to see a doctor.

According to Barnes, another clear sign of high blood sugar is a feeling of fatigue.

"Of course, feeling tired can have many causes. But it could be a sign that your body is not efficiently putting glucose (sugar) into your cells to use as energy, which means your blood sugar levels remain high," the specialist said.

Other signs of type 2 diabetes include:

Feeling unusually thirsty;

Feeling very hungry, even if you've eaten recently.
