What unexpected symptoms might indicate heart problem?

Symptoms that signal heart problems are not always what you expect, but if you feel something is wrong, experts advise not to ignore it.

Experts told Eat This, Not That! news portal some of the symptoms to look out for.

One sign of heart problems can be unusual fatigue.

"We're not talking about general fatigue, when you feel tired at the end of the day ... We're talking about when you could get up a couple flights of stairs and now you struggle to get up one or you can't get up the stairs without feeling very tired," interventional cardiologist Leslie Cho said.

Feeling suffocated can be a symptom of angina, doctors say.

"The word 'angina' actually means 'choking,' and sometimes tightness or pain can occur in the throat. People usually describe a feeling of 'tightness' or 'choking,'" explained Professor David Newby, chair of the Department of Cardiology at the University of Edinburgh.

Chest pain associated with a heart attack is not always obvious, experts say. "We need to look deeper into the symptoms of chest pain in men and women associated with heart attacks. It's rarely as dramatic as one might think, and can be similar to pressure or heartburn, which appear over time," says Dr. Cho.

Swollen ankles should not be ignored either, as it can be a sign of heart failure, but it is also very common and has many other causes, experts say.
