May 26, 2022  10:44

CNN told some important and interesting facts about conjoined or Siamese twins.

Siamese twins are physically connected to each other at some part of the body.

According to the University of Minnesota, Siamese twins occur once in 200,000 live births. About 70% of Siamese twins are women.

Siamese twins are born of the same sex.

The shape of Siamese twins refers to the place where they join. Top 5 most common junctions of Siamese twins: thoracopagus (heart, liver, intestines), omphalopagus (liver, biliary tree, intestines), pygopagus (spine, rectum, urogenital tract), ischiopagus (pelvis, liver, intestines, genitourinary tract ) and craniopagus (brain, meninges).

Scientists believe that Siamese twins develop from a single fertilized egg that failed to separate completely during division.

In 1955, neurosurgeon Dr. Harold Voris of Mercy Hospital in Chicago performed the first successful operation to separate conjoined twins.
