Strawberries contain useful biologically active compounds that have a positive effect on the nervous system and serve to prevent various diseases, Tatyana Zaletova, a cardiologist-dietitologist, told the Moscow City News Agency.

"Strawberries contain a large number and great variety of biologically active components, such as organic acids or polyphenols with their subclasses, tannins and flavonoids. Anthocyanins, a subclass of flavonoids, are important biologically active compounds, believed to have the ability to provide and activate cellular antioxidant defense, trap free radicals and therefore protect cells from damage. They are effective against chronic diseases, depression, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, heart disease," the doctor said.

Strawberries are rich in vitamin C and contain a lot of healthy folic acid.

"Strawberries are one of the richest natural sources of folic acid and show extremely high antioxidant activity. Several studies have shown a positive effect of strawberry consumption on insulin sensitivity. They also contain thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, vitamins B6, A, E, and K," Zaletova added.
