The best ways to improve memory

June 26, 2022  21:44

Neuropsychiatrist Dr. Reza Hosseini Ghomi wrote an article for Eat This, Not That! about memory loss due to neurodegenerative diseases and gave some tips for improving memory.

In particular, the first tip concerns exercise. Whatever you do, the type of activity doesn't matter. The important thing is to get your heart rate up to 120-140 beats per minute. Everyone is a little different, the most important thing is that you get out of breath and have trouble talking while exercising. Holding your breath means that you are moderately exerting yourself, and that is where the benefits lie. It's that kind of exertion that creates all the beneficial processes going on in your blood vessels, notes the doctor.

The second tip is diet. What we eat can make a big difference in the environment in our bodies. Diet affects where various diseases may or may not thrive. That said, he suggested not going on a diet, but choosing a single healthy eating habit - for example, reducing the amount of sugar you consume, or white bread, pasta.  Within a few months, you can make several changes that will have a huge impact on your body.

The third tip concerns social interaction. We all become more withdrawn as we age, which a study by the Centers for Disease Control has shown to be detrimental to our brains. Social isolation can accelerate memory loss and drastically reduce our quality of life. Although it can be difficult to make new friends as we age, try to renew old relationships.

The fourth tip is to eliminate any neuropsychiatric symptoms. This refers to any symptoms that may be lingering or new and that often go unaddressed. These include feelings of depression, anxiety, or trouble sleeping. This also includes more serious symptoms such as paranoia or hallucinations. Anything related to your mind that may be affecting your daily life should be discussed with your doctor.
